In our view and experience, pure wrestling and takedowns are some times not enough to overcome strong and heavy opponents while engaged in the clinch range, so strikes must be added to soften up (via pain and shock) the opponent before applying effectively the wrestling technique.
There are many possibilities to play with, but most of them evolve around close range hand and arm strikes, headbutts and knees, combined with control ties, joint manipulations and takedown techniques. Keep in mind that various strikes that are forbidden in sport fighting (such as headbutts, strikes to the back of the head, the groin etc) are particularly useful in street fighting, especially from the clinch. Note also that due to range and proximity of the people in the clinch, smart strikes are not easily detected, which means that they are not easily defended.
