The sprawl is among the most common defensive techniques used in combat sports with a heavy grappling aspect, such as wrestling, mma, combat sambo etc. In self defence sprawling is not that important, however in our school we believe that the ability to perform at least a decent sprawl is necessary in case you have to deal with a desperate opponent who decides to shoot for your legs or a person with some combat sport experience (not uncommon these days) who may try to pull off a grappling technique.
We don’t claim to be submission experts, nevertheless we do train a few submissions (mostly chokes and leg locks). In this video, we apply two types of chokes from the sprawling position (also called the front lock), that may be used against opponents that don’t react to strikes or pain (heavily intoxicated or mentally ill people), so they have to be taken out.
The first one is a simple guillotine-type choke that will work well against people with no grappling experience and the second one, which is much more complex but also almost 100% effective if applied correctly, is the so called "anaconda choke", responsible for many successful submissions in the combat sport arena.
